Motorcycle Helmets & Midwives – An Analogy

Hey, you pull over!

Yes, Officer?

Off with it. Hand it over.

What?

The helmet, take it off and turn it in.

But I'll be needing it. I have a ways to go.

Doesn't matter. No helmets allowed.

Not allowed? You want me to ride without my helmet?

Don't want you to ride that thing at all.

But riding a motorcycle isn't illegal.

No, riding isn't illegal, that would be restricting your rights, but helmets are illegal. Turn it in.

But I always ride with a helmet. I wouldn't feel safe to be without it. Motorcycle riding isn't safe. It’s reckless.

Without a helmet you just may change your mind about riding at all.

If I wear my helmet, obey the traffic laws, avoid travel in foul weatheror on poor roads, it’s not much different than traveling in that SUV.

Not much different? "Not much" is not good enough, things can happen, you could fall, or get hit...

But a different set of problems may come up with SUV travel: the vehicle could roll, or you could be trapped and submerged... plus there are long term risks. When considering the risk of greenhouse gases and global climate change, it is riskier to drive to town in that
SUV than on my motorcycle - WITH a helmet.

Risky schmisky, this global warming thing is all in you guys’ heads! We can't lend support to dangerous acts. Now the helmet has got to go, NOW!

I better get back to Minnesota.

Home birth is legal in every state, but some states,
such as SD, do not sanction the practice of independent midwives. Some state officials have said this is because they do not want to encourage home birth. The goal of SDSCO is to make the practice of home birth safer, by providing home birth families access to skilled midwives regulated by the state – similar to Minnesota.
